Circle of life

My dad’s not doing well.

He’s 84 and his heart is failing. This, along with reduced kidney function have added on to his previous set-backs of diabetes and loss of sight.

He lives two hours away from me and I am trying to visit him every weekend to spend some precious little time with him. But he’s tired now and sleeps most of the time. So my visits consist of a few minutes of conversation with him, then helping him into his bed for more naps.

I am heartbroken at all the times I didn’t visit or even just call him to talk about nothing in particular.

There’s a picture hanging on his wall. It’s a poster sized blow-up of a picture of him and my mom on their honeymoon in 1961 (we lost my mom in the winter of 1987). They’re both young and beautiful, in the prime of their lives. I look at that picture now, and realize that in my mind’s eye, that is how I think of them.  I look at my mom in that pic and hope that she is able to ease my father’s last few days, however many they may be.

When I was little my dad worked at a lumber mill in northern California in the Mendocino forests. He was a small but strong man who drove a forklift. Like all fathers, he seemed invincible today me then. But now I realize just how frail we all are in life.

A few years ago, the first dog I owned on my own, Athos, also reached old age and needed to be put down. I recall that at the end he also spent many hours sleeping. I was working at home those last few months and I endeavored to walk quietly as to not wake him as he slept. Still, to the end, he was always the eternally happy puppy we rescued from the pound so many years ago.

So, here I sit, watching my father doze a bit, thinking that some day it may be my son or daughters sitting next to me thinking about that day when I go to sleep and not wake up.

It’s all part of the circle of life, but it hurts nonetheless.

The right to vote

Today is Martin Luther King Jr day. The morning news shows are showing clips of the Selma march.  Oprah, John Legend and Common are discussing their latest movie. Above all, we are reminded of what African Americans have had to overcome just to gain the right to vote. After seeing all this, I’m left asking myself “when will these stories apply to the Latino community?” Continue reading “The right to vote”

Once a cop, always a cop

So I was watching a show on TV and noticed that an actor was playing a police officer. Not too unusual. But then I remembered that I had previously seen that same actor play a police officer in a different show.

So I did some research and it’s interesting to note just how many actors seem to reprise roles as police officers / FBI Agents/ etc. I have not idea why that happens.  I just find it interesting. I’f love to hear some theories on this. What’s yours? Continue reading “Once a cop, always a cop”

SEO Experiment 2: Tattoo Model Directory

This is the second experiment in the SEO Experiments – Prove It To Me series: Tattoo Model Directory.

In this experiment, we have a page which centers on the phrase “Tattoo Model Directory”. This uses the same concepts that proved successful in Tattoo Fondness experiment (Experiment 1) except that were using a much more common targeted search term: “tattoo model directory.” Nothing else has changed in my approach.

Since this is strictly a “first pass” experiment, the results may not be as great as they were in the Tattoo Fondness experiment. Nonetheless, I’m hoping for a top-20 result, and I’ll be happy with a top-30 result. Top-40 and lower, not-so-much.

Fingers crossed. Let’s see what happens. Google “tattoo model directory” and see what you get!

SEO Experiment 1: Tattoo Fondness – Update

A few days ago, I started a series of pages dealing with various SEO Experiments – Prove It To Me. Experiment one was titled Tattoo Fondness. The results are in. My theory proved correct in a BIG WAY! My test page is ranked #2 out of over 533,000 pages in the Google index. Success! Continue reading “SEO Experiment 1: Tattoo Fondness – Update”

SEO experiment 1: Tattoo Fondness

I’m running some SEO experiments.

The first experiment deals with using the words i n the title numerous times in the body of the content. Does this bring up the ranking of the page in question? The general consensus is “yes”.

So I’ve set up a page with an odd title (“Tattoo Fondness”) and I will be monitoring that phrase in the Google results for the next few days to see if it helps raise the result ranking for this page.

The page itself is located here:  Tattoo Fondness

The home page for all the experiments is located here: SEO Experiments – Prove It To Me

Check back periodically to see how the experiments are progressing.

Tea Party Minorities – An Odd Duck

Recently, I noticed several new followers on my Twitter account (@dadkind – what else?). What struck me was that they appear to be people of a conservative (or in one case extremely conservative) ideology. That’s not too unusual. I follow some conservative Twitterers (I still don’t know the proper plural) to try and gain an understanding of what makes people tick. But one, in particular, stood out: a minority member of the Tea Party.  Continue reading “Tea Party Minorities – An Odd Duck”

ILM Environmental Compliance

This post serves no purpose other than to see whether the Title of this article (“ILM Environmental Compliance”) and numerous, spurious mentions of the individual terms ILM, Environmental and Compliance can help boost google search results.

For example if someone searches for “ILM Environmental Compliance” will this blog post ever crack the top 10? or the top 100?

Next, suppose someone searches for the terms in a different order, say “Compliance ILM Environmental”. Will the page rankings change?

Lastly, does google mess with patterns on the page?

ILM is a term that I use
Compliance is nothing but a ruse
Environmental has varied uses and connotations
Yet they’re all located here.

So my terms are listed five times. Five for ILM; five for Compliance; five for Environmental.

Will this blog ever hit the google search pages?

Who know what magicks are performed there??

Hello World!

DadKind here.

This product was created as a by product of having created a second blog while logged in as user that has a higher calling. (That Higher Calling and the “other blog” don’t work well together, so I will be managing that “other blog”).

Confused? I know I was!

Anyway, there’s nothing going on here other than to post miscellaneous experiments and other such things here.

So, move along.
